Psychotherapy

Like most therapists, I integrate elements of various approaches based on the interplay between cognitive, emotional, and behavioral factors relevant to a specific client. I have pages on this site dedicated to how I think about and treat many common mental health concerns (e.g., anxietydepression), but the best way to learn about working with me is to schedule a free phone or video consultation. Once I have had a chance to learn about you and your situation, I can typically offer a personalized conceptualization of your issues along with how specifically therapy can be helpful.

My Treatment Philosophy and Approach

Positive outcomes in any type of therapy rely, first and foremost, on a trusting relationship between client and therapist. My primary task from the start is to be present and attuned to you in the room—to listen and communicate in ways that help you feel more fully understood and accepted, even as we work together to deepen your understanding of yourself and the changes you want to make.

The core of my practice is best described as relational. The defining feature of relational therapy is a focus on the therapeutic relationship as the primary source of change. As we build a real relationship, certain patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior will inevitably emerge between us in the room. This allows for “here and now” processing that not only increases awareness of current patterns but also generates opportunities for corrective emotional experiences.

Corrective Emotional Experiences

Corrective emotional experiences are an integral part of the therapeutic journey, offering opportunities for healing, growth, and transformation, particularly for individuals who have experienced relational or emotional difficulties in the past. By fostering moments of emotional connection and authenticity, therapy can help individuals rewrite their stories and cultivate greater resilience, self-compassion, and fulfillment in their lives.

What are Corrective Emotional Experiences?

Corrective emotional experiences involve moments in therapy where clients have the opportunity to re-experience past emotions in a new and therapeutic context. These experiences provide a chance to rewrite old narratives, challenge negative beliefs, and form healthier patterns of relating to oneself and others.

How Do They Work?

In therapy, we work collaboratively to create a safe and supportive environment where you can explore your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors without judgment. Through empathic understanding, validation, and insight, we aim to facilitate moments of emotional connection and growth.

Why are They Important?

For many individuals, past experiences may have shaped their perceptions of themselves, others, and the world around them in negative ways. Corrective emotional experiences offer an opportunity to challenge these entrenched beliefs and replace them with more adaptive and compassionate perspectives.

Examples of Corrective Emotional Experiences

These experiences can take many forms. For example, a client who has struggled with feelings of unworthiness may have a corrective emotional experience when they receive genuine acceptance and validation from their therapist. Similarly, someone who has experienced rejection or abandonment may find healing through consistent support and reliability in the therapeutic relationship.
